Our Story
I am Michael Murray, the owner of Miter Mike’s Woodshop. I create DIY and woodworking content. I have been married since 1999 my kids are Michael, Sofia, Alexa & McKenna, we also have 2 doodle dogs (Golden & Bernie).

HOW I GOT STARTED…
As a small child I loved to take things apart, fix them and put them back together. Sometimes I would just take them apart to see how they worked, and yes when they went back together it worked. I took shop class in high school. It started with Woodshop, Electrical shop, Metal shop and Drafting freshman year, I remained in Woodshop till I graduated. The shop teacher let me have full reign Senior year.
HOW DID I COME UP WITH THE NAME?
When my wife Carrie and I got married we were 21 & 22 years old. We didn’t have a lot of savings so when we purchased our first Townhouse, we wanted to update it to our tates(who am I kidding, Carrie wanted it updated…lol), there wasn’t much money to pay someone to do the upgrades. I had the bright idea that I could do it from all the years of doing odds and end jobs. Well what tools did I have at the time, probably a screw driver and a hammer…lol. We made a deal for every job that needed to be done, I would get the tool to perform that job, that was a lot cheaper than paying someone. Can you guess what the first tool I purchased was??? Yep a Miter Saw, I think it was a 10” DeWalt. What did I use it for? Well there was no crown or chair rail in the living room or kitchen, so when Carrie went out and picked the crown and chair rail profile, she came home with a miter box and backsaw, I was bewildered because that wasn’t the tool I was looking to purchase. I asked Carrie why she had them, she said the guy and store said I needed it to cut the pieces, well I told her that was not the right tool, I needed the Miter Saw…..and from then on that is how I grew the vast array of tools I have today.
ARE YOU REALLY A FULL TIME YOUTUBER?
Yes. I started Miter Mike’s Woodshop LLC on March 17, 2015 4 years later October 2019 I left my telecommunications job for 18 years with Verizon, to follow my dream of making things for people and teaching others how to just make something out of nothing.

Types of Wood we Work with

SOFTWOOD

Softwoods are the wood and lumber which are milled from conifer trees. Scientifically known as Gymnosperms, Conifer trees are any trees which have needles and produce cones. Examples of popular softwood trees used in woodworking, construction, and furniture are Pine, Cedar, Fir, Spruce, and Redwood.

HARDWOOD

Hardwoods come from any trees which do not produce needles or cones. These trees are most commonly are known as deciduous trees, more scientifically known as angiosperms. Hardwoods are trees which produces leaves and seeds. Common hardwood species include oak, maple, cherry, mahogany, and walnut. Hardwood species are not always necessarily stronger than softwoods, but many species are well known for their beautiful and distinct wood grain patterns.

ENGINEERED WOOD

The third type of wood you may encounter are engineered woods. Engineered wood does not occur naturally in the environment but instead are manufactured. These boards are generally made with wood which is manipulated to have certain qualities or features. Also known as composite wood, these products are often made from the waste wood of sawmills.
